The Trump administration is awarding $2b in grants to private tech companies in order to advance research and development in quantum computing, the Department of Commerce announced on Thursday. The devil is in the details, of course, but as spending priorities go this isn’t the worst investment. Quantum computing has some true mind-boggling potential use cases for stuff like drug development, physics research, and yes, socialist governance.1 And right now, the technology is stuck precisely at that phase where government intervention is needed the most, where the scientific and engineering challenges are too significant for private investors interested in short-term profits to overcome. Obviously there are other problems that the government should be focused on too, but if you think it should invest in scientific research at all, quantum computing is a perfect candidate.
