De-trumpification and the Democratic ratchet
Even if Democrats win in 2028 it will take a Herculean effort to roll back Trumpism.
Family members who came to retrieve vehicles that were abandoned when ICE agents arrested the drivers have discovered “death cards” left behind, according to the Denver Post. Reminiscent of the playing cards Vietnam soldiers left behind on corpses, the cards were stamped as the property of ICE’s Denver Field Office.
Though this is hardly the worst thing ICE has done even in the last twenty four hours, it reveals a problem that could take decades to remedy. ICE agents are leaving death cards behind because they see themselves at war against much of America. This includes not just immigrants, but the people of color who they suspect of being immigrants, as well as ordinary citizens who they view as terrorists. And Trump has taught them that in carrying out this war they need not worry about inconveniences like the rule of law and basic liberal democratic norms; indeed, that any attempt to enforce such things should be understood as the woke tyranny of treasonous Democrats.
