On the unchristian right

Contrary to what Liberal Currents argues, conservatives do often act in ways that should be described as unchristian.

An article from Liberal Currents has been making the rounds today: Trump the Redeemer, by Toby Buckle. Its ostensible premise — that white Evangelicals have wicked politics, but must nevertheless be counted as Christians — is fair enough as far as it goes. But the article seems to want to go further than that, routinely conflating white Evangelicals with Christians writ large.

Take the very first sentence:

The overwhelming Christian support for Donald Trump seems, to many secular liberals and progressives, both confusing and confused: who, after all, is less Christian than him?

Click on the link, and you won’t get information about Christians — rather, you’ll get a post about white Evangelicals. And this is a problem, because there is a real difference between the two when it comes to support for Trump:

Past studies, moreover, have demonstrated high variation in partisan affiliation among different Christian denominations:

We do get a passive acknowledgment that “there are also liberal Christians” early on, but this ends up having little bearing on his argument.
