The Supreme Court has issued two opinions on the federal government’s efforts to impose vaccination mandates on various US workplaces. On one hand, it has blocked vaccine-or-test requirements for some companies. On the other hand, however, it has effectively allowed them for any company receiving public funding. Why these two seemingly contradictory rulings? If you’ve been listening to right-wing rhetoric about how vaccination mandates are being driven by “authoritarianism,” you aren’t going to find many answers. But if you’re even remotely familiar with socialist critiques of neoliberalism, this makes perfect sense.
