Trump's Epstein problem is hilarious - and pointless

Funny? Absolutely. Consequential? Probably not.

It’s impossible not to enjoy watching the hard right’s obsession with the Jeffery Epstein scandal completely boomerang on them over the past few weeks. Donald Trump’s connection with Epstein has come under increasing scrutiny, and the last few days in particular have given us some truly insane stories — like the one about Trump’s birthday letter to Epstein where he revels over the “certain things” they share “in common.” The right has been trying to bury the liberal-left in pedophilia accusations ever since its 2016 conspiracy theories about Pizzagate, so what can you call them ensnaring the leader of the Republican party other than indisputable proof of God’s cosmic justice?

That said, a lot of the current Epstein discourse seems to need two crucial reality checks:

  1. This is unlikely to cause much electoral damage to the right or impede their agenda in any way.

  2. There are a lot of other issues at hand right now that are much, much more important.

This is more or less what Nanci Pelosi said last night, and setting her motives for saying it aside she is absolutely right.
